If you stay ready, you won’t have to get ready
My in-person MT Audition Song Analysis master class is a great way to tune up your go-to audition songs and refine your audition technique. With only one shot to get it right, it's so important to remain connected to objective every second, and to stay inside the song from the moment before the downbeat, all the way through to the last note. This technique is great for quieting the noise and allowing us to focus on who we're singing to, regardless of what the people behind the table are doing.
If you're just starting out on your professional journey … or if you've been around for a minute, but want to take the anxiety out of in-person auditions … this class is designed to be a supportive and nurturing environment in which to get ready and stay ready.
How It Works
This is a one-time class with limited enrollment. Each student will be expected to bring two contrasting audition songs, and we will do a work session on each. An accompanist will be provided, and you have the option of recording the final run-through of each piece. The class will be held on Wednesday, January 8th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.
The class fee is $200.
Testimonials
“Richard's class is amazing! I've been a student for three sessions and have loved every class. Not only am I rebuilding my audition book but it is holding me accountable to find and learn new music. I am connecting to the music and story in a very different way - much more focused and intimate. Also Richard creates a safe space to take risks and everyone is very supportive.”

“Richard’s class has unlocked new ways for me to approach auditions. Since my first session - I’ve booked a TV show, a new musical reading, and was put on avail for a national commercial. I truly attribute this to the tools and lessons I’ve learned from his class. Richard's knowledge, humor, and support have enabled me to feel comfortable and confident in class - which in turn, has allowed me to turn auditions into bookings, and classmates into friends.”

“Richard's class is a genuine creative deep dive that magically transforms a performance before your very eyes. It was a joy witnessing him work with other students-- they'd bring in a popular piece from their book we had all heard before to not much fanfare. But after taking them through a series of personal and insightful questions, every one of these performers would return to the piece with so much unique specificity and genuine emotion that it often brought us to tears. Seeing a performance go from being just "nice" to being a memorable and deeply resonant specific emotional character journey is truly like a magic trick. There is no substitute for the experience of being fully in-the-moment as you sing, and Richard can give you that gift, that freedom. His classroom environments are highly supportive, inspiring and fun. Just a big fat highly recommend-- not to be missed for any lover of musical theater who wants to up their stage game!

It’s a joy to learn from and work with Richard Israel. I didn’t expect a class on Zoom to be so effective, but it has really helped me with specificity and intention. My acting has become more honest…not to mention the class is just plain fun!”

“TAKE RICHARD’S CLASS! Richard is an incredible director/teacher to work with. His class has made me excited to audition by helping/challenging me to build a book and choose material that is fresh and authentic to myself. He provides a safe classroom environment that encourages all of his students to make new choices and take risks. Since working with Richard, I have consistently gotten more callbacks and booked my first lead role at an equity house. Not only is Richard’s class incredibly helpful, it is extremely fun and everyone is very supportive. I could not recommend this class more!”

About Richard
I started out as an actor - if you YouTube enough 90s TV, you will eventually come across me standing in front of a locker (or getting stuffed in it). I spent about 10 years auditioning for musicals, so I'm no stranger to the weird psychic shift that happens between the time you go over your cut with the accompanist, and the time you sing the first note. Over the last fifteen years, I've built a career as a musical theatre director, and that experience behind the table has allowed me to really see how doing the homework - answering the questions about objective, obstacle, viewpoint, etc. - can take the guesswork out of the audition process.
